Message from Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte:
For the first time in 40 years, the Filipino people will be able to view what happened, as it happened when former President Ferdinand E. Marcos announced that he had placed the Philippines under Martial Law.
Through an exclusive partnership between the Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office (PCDSPO) and ABS-CBN, a new generation of Filipinos will be able witness one of the most defining moments in the nation’s history with the only surviving full video footage of President Marcos declaring Martial Law via live television broadcast at 7:15 in the evening of Sunday, September 23, 1972. The video, from the archives of ABS-CBN, will be embedded on the Official Gazette’s web page, complete with an interactive multimedia timeline of significant events and documents, which centralizes past events.
Another Institutional Memory initiative by the PCDSPO, this online media event builds on the use of the Internet as a space for remembering the past. The video will be launched on September 23, 2012, exactly 40 years to the date and time of the original broadcast. Access it online through here: http://www.gov.ph/martial-law-40th-anniversary/.
